Utility Company Keeps Quality Power Flowing to its Customer
One of the nation’s largest utilities is located in Arizona. It operates or participates in 11 major power plants and numerous other generating stations, including thermal, nuclear, natural gas and hydroelectric sources.
As more and more customers come on line, the utility has shown a consistent commitment to providing its customers better reliability and power quality. With a power quality program that has been in place for years, it continues to employ the latest technology in this area.
Power reliability and power quality are special concerns among industrial manufacturers as electrical supply disruption can cost a plant millions of dollars due to lost production time and equipment damage. Of course, power reliability means more than just a steady supply of electricity, it also means ensuring a high level of power quality, free of sags, swells, harmonics or transients that can damage equipment or cause it to fail prematurely.
Monitoring Project Makes Power Quality a Priority
About 10 years ago, the utility began working with Schneider Electric on purchasing and installing power quality monitors throughout its vast system. It started with ION Enterprise panel-mounted 7700s. Now, it’s created a system capable of comprehensive monitoring, with approximately 85 ION monitors of various models functioning as power quality monitors at its numerous substations, including some in substations dedicated to large industrial customers.
With a significant industrial and manufacturing market in the utility’s service area, power quality became a bigger concern, especially to those industrial customers who are sensitive to voltage sags. One such industry involves companies in the area that fabricate microelectronics, which includes a very sensitive process such that when they have a voltage sag they can easily lose two or three million dollars by a single fluctuation of the lights. So, when these companies build a new factory and it costs upwards a billion dollars, they don’t leave any stone unturned.
Power quality monitors serve as a data collection system that watches for voltage sag events that may impact customers. Determining the location of power quality monitors for the establishment of voltage sag indices was critical, balancing the cost of additional monitors versus the amount of coverage that a given monitor location can provide.

| How to Mark Your Underground Utilities
Since 1948 Tech Products has been helping utilities mark their underground cable, pipelines and sewers. In most areas the most visible products are the best. Poly Dome markers, flat line markers, signs on metal u-channels are all systems in place and very effective. The only challenge is where ATV’s, Quads, Motocross riders like to ride. In these areas, markings tend to get knocked down, ripped up or generally abused.
To make sure your system is still marked and doesn’t get dug up we have invented the EVERLAST ® ground markers. Using our patented technology to have signs that can last in any environment, the ground markers lay flat on the ground so they can be ran over by an All Terrain Vehicle and not destroy the message. Using these markers your utility system will continue to be safe.

Remote Mid-Span Stripper
Ripley has been manufacturing mid-span stripping tools for covered aerial cable for over forty years. The original tools were of the hook and ring design for hot stick operation and as laws on gloving changed these evolved into hand tools. Typically these tools when working on tree cable or spacer cable required two line persons and two bucket trucks. Using these hand tools required covering the messenger and the other two phases along with removing the conductor to be stripped from the spacer to gain clearance for the tool. A number of years ago Ripley conceived of the idea to make a mechanized tool around the concept of a hand tool that would be easier, faster and safer and which would require one person operation. The result is the innovative Remote Mid-Span Stripper (RMS) for the removal of insulation from energized tree wire and spacer cable faster, easier, and safer, saving time, resources, and ultimately money for the end-user .
To maximize the effectiveness and safety aspects of the RMS, the head is made of Delrin, a durable non-conductive polymer material. The shroud covering the metal bushing is also made of the Delrin material. The shaft is a 4 ft hollow hot stick with an epoxy rod attached to the head and gear box. The 4 ft shaft keeps the operator below the energized conductors. The RMS has a 25 to 1 low resistance gear ratio with an easy-to-use, detachable crank handle allowing for low resistance and easy stripping. The RMS is designed to accommodate multiple cable sizes from 1/0 up to 795 kcmil through 34.5 kV by using interchangeable, easy-to-install bushings.
One operator in a bucket can make a complete mid-span strip in approximately 15 minutes. The actual strip using a drill will take less than 2 minutes. All of this is accomplished without taking the conductor out of the spacers and while the operator is positioned 4 ft below the energized conductors. The RMS tools are presently being used at Utilities in Massachusetts, New York, Florida, Washington, and British Columbia.

SDR Distribution Recloser
Siemens has more than 30 years of experience in vacuum switching technology and is a leader in the field of digital protection technology. The SDR Recloser combines cutting-edge technology with quality engineering experience in relay protection schemes for which Siemens is known.
The Siemens 7SR Controller constitutes the brains of the recloser. It comprises indicators and control elements, communication interfaces and a USB port for convenient connection of a laptop computer. Access to the user level menus and data is protected by multilevel password authentication. Along with over-current time protection (49 preset curves and multiple user configurable curves), it is equipped for earth fault and sensitive earth fault detection. Inrush restraint and load shedding are further protection functions that help prevent nuisance outages.
The Siemens 7SR Controller offers a multitude of inputs and outputs for customer use. Additional communication modules for data transfer are available as options. Self-monitoring and measuring functions round out the profile. The Siemens 7SR Controller is mounted in a cabinet, which also contains the auxiliary power supply and a battery-backed UPS unit, fuses and a general purpose outlet to power a laptop.
Siemens SDR Distribution Reclosers offer dependable protection for temporary faults in overhead line networks and improve the reliability of power supply systems. The Siemens 7SR Controller, the core of the system, provides a high level of protection, easy operation, and high operating efficiency.

HALO High Voltage Digital Ammeters
HD Electric Company's HALO Ammeters are high voltage digital ammeters for use on power distribution systems and are designed to take True RMS AC current measurements up to 2000 amps on voltages up to 69kV. The open core design allows the user to quickly hook it over a conductor from the end of a hotstick and obtain a current reading in amperes. The HALO can be used to take spot load measurements on single or multi-phase systems to determine load balance.
The HALO is available with either a hook or fork-style sensing head. There are two models, the HALO I and the HALO II. The HALO I has a peak-hold mode which stores the reading until the display is reset. The HALO II includes peak-hold and tracking modes, allowing the user to view continuous changes in current on the display.
Features and benefits:
- Quickly takes current readings up to 2000 amps on conductors up to 69kV (phase-to-phase)
- Hook or fork-style sensing heads
- Track only or track / peak-hold models available
- 9V battery powered with auto shut-off
- Use on overhead or underground applications
- Take spot-load / phase balancing checks with ease
- Lightweight and easy to manage on an extension hotstick
