TE Raychem CSJA Cold Shrink In-Line Joint: 15 to 35 kV All-In-One Splice

Splicing a shielded medium voltage cable the old way means a stack of parts: a splice body, stress relief mastic, a connector, a neutral restoration and a rejacketing kit. The TE Connectivity Raychem CSJA "All-In-One" in-line joint puts most of that into a single pre-expanded cold shrink assembly. It is built for 1/C shielded power cables from 15 kV through 35 kV, and it meets IEEE 404 requirements across that range.

What Is the TE Raychem CSJA Joint?

The CSJA is a cold shrink in-line splice for single conductor shielded power cable. The body is a one piece, pre-expanded silicone rubber joint with factory molded stress cones and a Faraday cage for electrical stress control. A pre-expanded EPDM rejacketing splice and an integrated neutral sock come in the same kit, so shield continuity and the outer jacket are restored without separate components. TE states that void filling stress relief mastics are not necessary.

It installs on a spiral holdout, so there is no heat source, torch, or tape wrapping involved. The ergonomic spiral holdout is designed for low release forces and a smooth installation.

Key Features of the CSJA

  • All-in-one kit: pre-expanded EPDM rejacketing splice and an integrated neutral sock
  • Compact: total splice body length on the holdout is 14 to 19 inches
  • Wide application range: the pre-expanded single piece silicone rubber body has high mechanical expansion capability, so one catalog number covers a range of cable sizes
  • Silicone rubber body: high dielectric strength, high tear strength, low tension set, and excellent low temperature recovery
  • No mastic: integrated stress control with factory molded stress cones and a Faraday cage
  • Connector flexibility: accepts both mechanical and compression connectors, and with a shear bolt connector it is a totally crimpless system

Which Cables Can the CSJA Splice?

The CSJA is designed for 1/C shielded power cables from 15 kV to 35 kV with these shield types:

  • Tape shield
  • Wire shield
  • LC shield
  • UniShield
  • JCN (jacketed concentric neutral)
  • Flat strap shield

TE notes that the joint's shield continuity concept can also bridge concentric neutrals. Selections in the datasheet are based on the typical dimensions of 100% insulation level cables made to the AEIC standard, with nominal insulation thickness of 175 mils at 15 kV, 260 mils at 25 kV, and 345 mils at 35 kV.

CSJA Standards and Testing

The CSJA system meets IEEE 404 requirements for 15 kV through 35 kV. Each silicone splice body is factory tested, including AC withstand and partial discharge, in accordance with IEEE 404 production tests. TE lists related test reports EDR-5430, EDR-5455, and EDR-5513 in the ordering information.

CSJA Catalog Numbers and Sizes

The catalog number tells you the voltage class, the size, and the connector. For example, CSJA-1522 is a 15 kV joint without a connector, and CSJA-3524M8 is a 35 kV joint with an aluminum mechanical connector. Three versions are available: without a connector, with a copper mechanical connector, and with an aluminum mechanical connector. Each catalog number below links to its page in the Powertech store. How Much Space Does the CSJA Need?

The installed kit length and the working space you need depend on the size group:

Size GroupKit Installed LengthRequired Installation Space
CSJA-xx21, xx22 (smaller sizes)29 in (737 mm)39 in (990 mm)
CSJA-xx2333 in (838 mm)43 in (1090 mm)
CSJA-xx24, xx25 (larger sizes)37 in (939 mm)49 in (1244 mm)

The neutral sock is sized for 1/0 AWG on the smaller sizes and 2/0 AWG on the larger ones.

External Grounding Kits

If external grounding is required, TE offers a cold applied external grounding kit, the CSJ-EG, with a 24 inch (610 mm) moisture blocked braid. CSJ-EG-1 uses #8 AWG braid, CSJ-EG-2 uses #6 AWG, and CSJ-EG-3 uses #4 AWG.

How to Select the Right CSJA

  1. Identify the cable voltage class: 15, 28, or 35 kV.
  2. Measure the insulation OD and the jacket OD of the cable. Use these as the final ordering criteria, along with the conductor size.
  3. Pick the catalog number whose insulation OD range and maximum jacket OD cover your cable.
  4. Decide on the connector: none (order separately), a copper mechanical connector, or an aluminum mechanical connector. If a connector is included, confirm it matches the diameter over your conductor.
  5. Add a CSJ-EG kit if external grounding is required.

The standard package is one kit per box. TE advises confirming dimensions against the current datasheet, since dimensions are for reference and subject to change.

Frequently Asked Questions About the CSJA Joint

What voltage range does the TE Raychem CSJA cover?

The CSJA covers 15 kV, 28 kV, and 35 kV class 1/C shielded power cables, and it meets IEEE 404 requirements for that range.

Is the CSJA a cold shrink or heat shrink splice?

It is a cold shrink splice. The silicone rubber body and the EPDM rejacketing splice are pre-expanded on a spiral holdout, so no heat or torch is needed.

Does the CSJA need stress relief mastic?

No. TE states that void filling stress relief mastics are not necessary because the joint has integrated electrical stress control with factory molded stress cones and a Faraday cage.

What cable shields can the CSJA be used on?

Tape shield, wire shield, LC shield, UniShield, JCN, and flat strap shielded cables.

Can the CSJA be used with a shear bolt connector?

Yes. The joint accepts mechanical and compression connectors, and with a shear bolt connector it is a totally crimpless system.

How long is the CSJA splice body?

The total length of the splice body on the holdout is 14 to 19 inches. The installed kit length is 29 to 37 inches, and TE lists 39 to 49 inches of required installation space.

Does the CSJA come with copper and aluminum connector options?

Yes. Catalog numbers with an M suffix include a mechanical connector. TE lists separate copper and aluminum versions, and the connector must match the diameter over the cable conductor.

Is the CSJA factory tested?

Yes. Each silicone splice body is factory tested, including AC withstand and partial discharge, in accordance with IEEE 404 production tests.
