ABG Bag Containment and Field Bags: Which Product for Which Job

ABG Bag makes a small group of reusable products for utility crews. Some contain oil from a leaking transformer or capacitor. Others haul debris or hold backfill at a pole setting. This guide sorts them by the job, so you can find the right one fast.

BOB transformer containment bags

BOB is a leakproof, UN-rated containment bag with a DOT Special Permit for PCB oil containment. The lifting loops form one sling, so the bag lifts the transformer it is holding. Slide it around the unit on the pole or pad, lower it, and the oil stays inside.

Pole-mount bags run from the BOB-26 for 10 to 25 kVA up to the BOB-70 for 250 to 500 kVA, with capacity up to 4,000 lbs. Pad-mount bags go up to 7,500 lbs. Pick by mounting style first, then match the kVA on the nameplate. The full size tables are in our BOB transformer containment bag guide.

FlexTrays for three-phase pad-mounts

A FlexTray is a foldable tray for moving a three-phase pad-mount transformer. It has raised sides and a sturdy bottom, and cam buckles and webbing secure it to the transformer. ABG says it needs no special tools and fits pad-mounts of any size, brand or model. It is 100% recyclable. ABG does not list a fluid volume for either size.

CapBag for single-phase capacitors

The CAP-01 CapBag is a containment bag for a single-phase 20 kV capacitor that may contain PCBs. It has a patented self-lifting design with reinforced lifting loops, so crews can move a heavy, awkward capacitor without extra equipment. It is 22 x 11 x 23 in with a 250 lb capacity, is recyclable, and is small enough to carry on a utility truck. ABG lists it as DOT, TSCA and EPA compliant.

Gorilla Tarp

The Gorilla Tarp is an octagon-shaped tarp with lifting slings, built for hauling heavy and sharp-edged material. The octagon shape maximizes surface area, which means fewer trips. It is reusable and recyclable.

Typical uses are demolition debris, job site cleanup, moving poles or large amounts of soil, and landscaping. Contact Powertech Associates to confirm the rated load for your job.

Polesetter RockBag

The Polesetter RockBag moves and places aggregate or backfill when you set a pole. It lifts from the top, has a flow-control spout for controlled release, and is reusable and recyclable. ABG gives it a 5:1 safety factor. The standard bags fold for storage on a utility truck.

The PS-01R is the rigid version, with a hard bottom, downspout, lifting loops, a pocket and lids. It has the same 1,500 lb capacity and 5:1 safety factor as the PS-01.

How to choose

  1. Decide if it is a spill or a haul. Oil and PCB containment is a BOB, FlexTray or CapBag. Debris and aggregate is a Gorilla Tarp or RockBag.
  2. For transformers, pick by mounting style, then by the kVA on the nameplate.
  3. Check the weight of the load against the bag capacity, and go up a size if you are between two.
  4. Confirm your own PCB handling and reuse procedures before reusing any containment bag.

Frequently asked questions

Which ABG product do I need for a pole-mount transformer?

A BOB bag. Match the bag to the kVA on the nameplate, from the BOB-26 for 10 to 25 kVA up to the BOB-70 for 250 to 500 kVA.

Should I use a FlexTray or a BOB bag on a three-phase pad-mount?

The BOB-72 is a bag for smaller three-phase units. The CT-84 and CT-96 FlexTrays are trays for larger units, secured with cam buckles and webbing. Check the transformer dimensions and weight against the product you choose.

Do ABG containment products work with PCB oil?

ABG designs BOB, FlexTrays and CapBag for PCB containment and lists them as DOT, TSCA and EPA compliant. BOB also carries a DOT Special Permit for PCB oil containment and a UN rating.

What is the difference between the PS-01 and PS-02 RockBags?

The PS-02 is larger: 110 gallons and 2,000 lbs, against 55 gallons and 1,500 lbs for the PS-01. Both have a 5:1 safety factor.

What is the rigid RockBag for?

The PS-01R has a hard bottom and lids, which helps keep the bag open and upright while you fill it.

What do ABG tarps carry?

Demolition debris, job site waste, soil and mulch, and utility poles or sections. They have lifting slings for crane or loader lifts.
