Richards Cable Adapter Sizing: How to Choose P625CA and P635CA Sizes

Richards deadbreak cable adapters are lettered, and the letter you need depends on one number: the diameter over the cable insulation. Pick the wrong letter and the adapter will not seat correctly on the cable. This guide has the Richards sizing tables for 15/25 kV and 35 kV, shows which Richards products use them, and covers the matching jacket seal kits. All values come from the Richards Medium Voltage Products catalog (Tables W1 and W3).

What Does a Richards Cable Adapter Do?

The cable adapter fits over the prepared cable insulation and matches it to the deadbreak elbow or disconnectable joint. In Richards part numbers it is the "W" field. The adapter part number is P625CA-W for 15/25 kV and P635CA-W for 35 kV, where W is the size letter from the tables below.

The same sizing tables are used across Richards' 600/900 A deadbreak elbows, joints and splices, including the 62LCT, P625JS and P625JI/JY/JH/JU/JL/JE families at 15/25 kV and the matching 63 and P635 families at 35 kV. See our guides to the deadbreak elbow and the JSCS sleeve.

How Do You Pick the Right Size?

  1. Get the insulation diameter over the prepared cable from the cable manufacturer's data. Richards also includes a cable specification reference with industry-standard minimum and maximum insulation diameters in its catalog.
  2. Find the voltage class: Table W1 for 15/25 kV or Table W3 for 35 kV.
  3. Find the row where your diameter falls between the minimum and maximum, and read the letter in the last column.
  4. Use that letter as the W in the part number (for example, P625CA-LM) and in the kit number.

Some ranges overlap, so a cable can fall in two sizes. If yours does, send us the cable details and we will confirm with Richards.

Richards notes that copper-top and 900 A copper versions of these kits are not listed but use the same sizing (change the 6 to a 7 or 9), and that versions without a test point also use the same sizing. The store listings for 15/25 kV adapters that are not linked above are available on request.

200 A loadbreak elbows use a different table (Table W2), with sizes A through D for the 21LBT family.

Which Jacket Seal Goes With Which Cable Adapter?

The jacket seal is sized to the cable adapter letter. Richards lists these common options, with the kit suffix used in a full part number:

SuffixPart NumberWhat It IsFor Cable Adapter SizeSeal Diameter Range
ACPCRK-005-1Cold shrink sealE to J0.95 to 1.94 in
ADPCRK-005-2Cold shrink sealK to P1.28 to 2.67 in

DGPCRK12-6Cold shrink seal and #4 AWG tinned copper braid with constant force springLarger than P1.60 to 3.50 in

The braid is supplied at 36 inches. Contact the factory if you need a different length.

Cable Adapter Size and Lug Code Work Together

The cable adapter letter (W) handles the insulation diameter. The lug code (X) handles the conductor. Both go in the elbow or joint part number, as in 6-2-LC-N-2-LM-23-D-D, where LM is the adapter and 23 is the lug code. For the lug code tables, see our JSCS guide and deadbreak elbow guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know what size cable adapter I need?

Measure or look up the diameter over the cable insulation, then find it in Table W1 (15/25 kV) or Table W3 (35 kV). The letter in the last column is your size.

What is the difference between P625CA and P635CA?

P625CA is for 15/25 kV systems and P635CA is for 35 kV systems.

Why does 35 kV start at size H?

Richards' 35 kV table starts at size H (0.850 in minimum) and runs through R. The 15/25 kV table starts smaller, at size E.

Does the same adapter size work for elbows and joints?

Yes. Richards uses the same W table for the 62LCT elbows, the P625JS/JSCS sleeves and the P625 joint families at 15/25 kV, and the matching 35 kV families use Table W3.

Which jacket seal do I need?

Match it to the adapter letter. PCRK-005-1 is for E to J, PCRK-005-2 for K to P, and PCRK-005-3 for sizes larger than P. The PCRK16-2, PCRK12-3 and PCRK12-6 versions add a tinned copper braid for shield grounding.

What if my cable falls between two sizes?

Some ranges overlap. Contact Powertech Associates with the cable details and we will confirm the right size with Richards.

Not sure which adapter your cable needs? Contact Powertech Associates with your cable insulation diameter and voltage class and we will find the part number. Many of the adapters above are available in our online store.
