Richards Deadbreak Accessories: Plugs, Caps, Bushings and Grounding

A Richards deadbreak system is more than the elbow. Richards sells a full line of 600/900 A deadbreak accessories for insulating, extending, parking, testing, grounding and splicing. This guide lists what each accessory is, the part numbers by voltage class and conductor, and where our online store carries it. All part numbers come from the Richards Medium Voltage Products catalog.

How Are Richards Deadbreak Accessory Part Numbers Built?

Most deadbreak accessories follow the same pattern:

  • P6 or P9 prefix: P6 parts have aluminum components for 600 A. P9 parts have copper components for 900 A.
  • 25 or 35: 25 is for 15/25 kV systems and 35 is for 35 kV systems. For example, P625HIP is a 15/25 kV aluminum insulating plug and P935HIP is a 35 kV copper insulating plug.
  • Product code: HIP for insulating plug, CPR for connecting plug, BE for bushing extender, and so on.
  • Stud suffix: -S means the stud is installed. -LS means the stud is loose.

Insulating plugs and connecting plugs also come with a stud installed (-S) or loose (-LS). Richards lists a low profile insulating plug cap, part number HIP-CAP-LP.

Insulating Plugs and Caps

The insulating plug (HIP) is the plug supplied with kit type 2 of the Richards deadbreak elbow. It comes in aluminum (P625HIP, P635HIP) and copper (P925HIP, P935HIP), and each version is offered with the stud installed or loose.

Insulating caps come in four 15/25 kV versions: without test point and loose stud (P625ICN), with test point and loose stud (P625IC), without test point and installed stud (P625ICN-S), and with test point and installed stud (P625IC-S). The 35 kV cap is P635IC, and its stud is molded in. Richards also lists 35 kV, 200 kV BIL versions of some caps, plugs and bushing extenders. Our store carries P635IC-200 and P935IC-200.

Connecting Plugs

Connecting plugs join elbows in a splice or multi-way arrangement. They are part of Richards' elbow splice kits (62LJT2 and larger). Per Richards, connecting plugs are installed by engaging the 3/8 inch hex broach, and the P6AT installation tool is used for that. The 35 kV, 200 kV BIL versions are P635CPR-200 and P935CPR-200.

Bushing Extenders and Parking Bushings

The deadbreak bushing extender (P625BE, P635BE and the copper P925BE, P935BE) comes with a stud. The insulated parking bushing (P625IPB, P635IPB) gives you a place to park an elbow when it is disconnected.

Grounding Accessories

  • Grounding bushing (P625GB, P635GB): supplied with a 6 ft 4/0 copper cable. Contact the factory if you need a different size or length.
  • Grounding elbow with insulating plug and installed stud (P625HHG, 15/25 kV): supplied with a 12 ft 4/0 copper cable and Salisbury clamp. Contact the factory for a different size or length.

Other Deadbreak Accessories

  • Elbow tap plug (P615ETP 15 kV, P625ETP 25 kV) and loadbreak reducing tap plug (P615LRTP, 15 kV). Our store carries P625ETP and P615LRTP.
  • Disconnect link (P925DL, 15/25 kV).
  • Straight receptacle adapter kits (P625SRA, P925SRA and the SRA1, SRAB1, SRA2WX and SRAB2WX kits): conversion kits that include combinations of bolt, sleeve, barrier bolt, lug, cable adapter and retaining ring.
  • Elbow subunit kits (P625SK1WX, P635SK1WX, P725SK1WX, P735SK1WX, P925SK1WX, P935SK1WX): a cable adapter and lug sold together. Use the cable adapter table for W and the lug table for X.
  • Silicone grease: P6SL1 (one 5 gram packet), P6SL5 (one 5 oz tube), P6SL100 (100 packets) and P6SL500 (100 tubes).

Where Do These Fit?

Frequently Asked Questions

What does HIP stand for in P625HIP?

The catalog lists it as the deadbreak insulating plug. The HIP prefix appears on the plug and the stud (P625HIP-STUD).

What is the difference between P625 and P925 parts?

P6 parts are aluminum and rated 600 A. P9 parts are copper and rated 900 A. The 25 is the voltage class (15/25 kV).

What does the -S and -LS suffix mean?

-S means the stud is installed in the plug. -LS means the stud is supplied loose.

Which grounding accessory should I use?

The grounding bushing (P625GB or P635GB) is supplied with 6 ft of 4/0 copper cable. The grounding elbow (P625HHG) is supplied with 12 ft of 4/0 copper cable and a Salisbury clamp.

Do you carry all of these?

Our online store carries most of the 15/25 kV and 35 kV deadbreak accessories. Contact Powertech Associates for anything not shown, including copper and 200 kV BIL versions, and we will quote it.
