Ripley Bushings, Blades and Replacement Parts: Which Fits Which Tool

Many Ripley end strippers use interchangeable bushings sized to the cable. Pick the wrong one and the tool cuts too deep, too shallow or will not fit over the cable at all. This guide shows which bushing, blade or sleeve goes with which tool and what you need to know about your cable to order it.

WS 5 and WS 6 bushings

These two are sized by the outside diameter of the cable over the insulation or semi-con. Each bushing covers a 0.025 in range. For example, the WS 5-1000 (10310-1000) covers 0.961 to 0.985 in, and the WS 6-1000 (12905-1000) covers 0.961 to 0.985 in as well. Measure the cable OD, find the bushing whose range includes it, and order that part number. The WS 5 300 and 325 bushings share the same 0.286 to 0.310 in range.

Square cut and chamfer cut bushings

The 2x2 Plus, 4x4 Plus, WS 68 and WS 22 series use bushings chosen by three things instead of just OD:

  • Conductor type: concentric, compressed or compacted
  • Conductor size: 6 AWG to 500 kcmil for the 2x2 and 4x4 Plus, and 1/0 AWG to 1000 kcmil for the WS 22
  • Insulation thickness: 45, 60, 80 or 95 mil, plus 110 mil on the WS 22 bushings

Square cut bushings leave a square end on the insulation. Chamfer cut bushings leave a tapered end, and they fit the 2x2 Plus and 4x4 Plus. Note that the same part number can cover more than one conductor type, and a few entries on the store listings share a part number across sizes. Send us the conductor type, size and insulation thickness and we will confirm the exact part number.

US16 and US16 MAX bushings

The US16-7000 uses US16-7100 bushings with bores from 0.700 to 1.475 in in 0.025 in steps. Each bore is sized 0.010 to 0.035 in above the cable OD over insulation or semi-con. For example, the 0.700 in bore covers 0.665 to 0.690 in. The US16 MAX uses the US16-7200 series, with 46 bores from 0.800 to 2.450 in.

WS 40 bushings, sleeves and blades

The WS 40 is a motorized semi-con removal tool, and it needs three parts from three tables. Pick the master shaving bushing (MSB) whose range covers the cable OD over the semi-con shield. Pick adapter sleeves, ideally the size nearest your cable plus one size larger and one smaller. Then pick the blade that matches the bushing.

How to order the right part

  1. Name the tool: WS 5, WS 6, WS 22, 2x2 Plus, 4x4 Plus, WS 68, US16 or WS 40.
  2. Measure the cable OD over the insulation or semi-con, in inches.
  3. For the square cut and chamfer cut bushings, also note the conductor type, conductor size and insulation thickness.
  4. For the WS 40, order the bushing, sleeves and blade together.
  5. Send it to us and we will confirm the part number before you buy.

Frequently asked questions

Do WS 5 and WS 6 bushings interchange?

No. The WS 5 bushings use part numbers 10310-xxx and the WS 6 bushings use 12905-xxx. Each set is made for its own tool.

What size bushing do I need?

For the WS 5, WS 6 and US16, use the cable OD over the insulation or semi-con. For the 2x2 Plus, 4x4 Plus, WS 68 and WS 22, use the conductor type, size and insulation thickness.

Do the bushings come with a replacement blade?

No, the blades are separate. The CB 6667 fits the square cut bushings on the 2x2, 4x4, WS 49, WS 68 and US21 tools.

Where do I find the stripper itself?

See our Ripley cable stripper guide, or our guide to Ripley cable prep tool kits.
