TE Connectivity Wildlife and Asset Protection Products: Which Raychem Product Protects What

Birds, squirrels and other animals cause outages when they bridge energized parts. TE Connectivity's Raychem wildlife and asset protection range covers several places they reach. This guide shows which Raychem product covers which part of the equipment, how the products compare, and where to find the detailed guide for each one.

Busbar insulation tubing: BBIT and BPTM

BBIT is heavy-wall heat shrink tubing and BPTM is medium-wall. Both insulate copper and aluminum busbars, and TE lists BBIT for specified applications up to 36 kV and BPTM for specified applications up to 25 kV. Our BBIT vs BPTM guide has the sizing tables, the differences and the installation video.

Busbar insulation tape: HVBT

HVBT is a heat shrink, adhesive-coated tape for insulating busbars. TE describes it as a retrofit solution, particularly where existing equipment cannot be dismantled, and it can go over a wide variety of shapes, including complex connections. A single layer, two-thirds overlapped, gives AC voltage withstand of at least 17.5 kV, and a second layer raises it to 36 kV. See the HVBT guide for the sizing tables and installation video.

Fusion tape: Raychem MVFT

The Raychem Medium Voltage Fusion Tape (MVFT) is a self-amalgamating tape that provides insulation enhancement and protection against accidentally induced discharge. It combines the properties of a silicone polymer with a wraparound format. TE aims it at wildlife and asset protection, particularly retrofit insulation of busbars where equipment cannot be dismantled.

MVFT key features

  • Compatible with TE's Raychem medium voltage insulation enhancement system
  • Indoor and outdoor use
  • Non-tracking properties
  • Continuous operating temperature up to 90 degrees C
  • Fuses to itself and other insulating materials to form a complete seal, but does not adhere to metal or porcelain, so it can be removed for maintenance
  • Easy to install over complex shapes and connections
  • A single layer, two-thirds overlapped, gives AC withstand of at least 15 kV, increasing to 35 kV with a second layer

Conductor covers: Raychem MVCC

The Raychem MVCC is a split, wrap-around silicone cover for substation leads and jumpers. TE designed the covers to protect energized conductors from flashovers due to contact from birds and animals.

MVCC key features

  • Non-tracking silicone material for harsh outdoor medium voltage environments
  • Split design for tool-free, wrap-around installation
  • Flexible enough for tight bends

How do I choose?

  1. Busbar with an open end where tubing can slide on: look at BBIT or BPTM.
  2. Busbar that cannot be taken apart, or has complex connections: look at HVBT or MVFT tape.
  3. Substation leads and jumpers: look at MVCC covers, sized by conductor diameter.
  4. Breaker, transformer or pole-top transformer bushings: look at BCAC-IC covers, sized by the insulator core and shed range.
  5. Substation bus insulators: look at BISG-24 guards, sized by insulator core diameter.

Check each data sheet for the voltage rating that applies to your equipment. TE lists the ratings differently for each product.

Frequently asked questions

What is the TE wildlife and asset protection range?

It is TE Connectivity's line of tubes, tapes, sheets, pre-formed covers and barriers designed to protect equipment against outages from birds, animals and weather.

What is the difference between BBIT, BPTM and HVBT?

BBIT and BPTM are heat shrink tubing, heavy-wall and medium-wall. HVBT is a heat shrink, adhesive-coated tape. See the comparison table in our HVBT guide.

What is the difference between HVBT and MVFT?

Both are wraparound tapes for retrofit busbar insulation. HVBT is a heat shrink, adhesive-coated tape rated at least 17.5 kV with one layer and 36 kV with two. MVFT is a self-amalgamating silicone tape rated at least 15 kV with one layer and 35 kV with two.

What does the MVCC protect?

It protects energized substation leads and jumpers from flashovers due to contact from birds and animals.

What voltage is the MVCC suitable for?

TE lists the MVCC as suitable for up to 25 kV phase-to-ground.

What size conductors does the MVCC fit?

The four MVCC sizes cover conductors up to 44 mm (1.75 in), as shown in the selection table above.

Do I need tools to install the MVCC?

No. TE describes the MVCC as a split, wrap-around cover with tool-free installation. Follow installation instructions PII 55790.

Does MVFT stick to the busbar?

No. It fuses to itself and other insulating materials, but does not adhere to metal or porcelain, so it can be removed for maintenance.

What does the BCAC-IC cover?

It covers breaker, transformer and pole-top transformer bushings rated 15 kV to 36 kV to prevent animal caused outages. The double-hinged cover snaps into place, and conductors can exit from the top or side without trimming.

Can I still check the oil level with a BCAC-IC installed?

Yes. TE says oil fill levels on transformer bushings can be inspected visually.

How is the BISG-24 installed?

TE says one person can install it on energized equipment. The wedge-driven design is made for hot-stick installation on vertical and horizontal insulators.

What torch do I need for BBIT, BPTM and HVBT?

All three are heat shrink products, so you need a propane torch with the right hose and regulator for the job. Our Raychem torches and accessories guide compares the three Raychem torch kits and the hoses and regulators that go with them.
