Storm Response Truck Stock: What to Carry for Oil Spills, Cable Repair and Site Safety

When a storm hits, crews load up fast and sort out what is missing once they are on site. This is a checklist of products we carry, grouped by the problem they solve. Each section links to the guide with sizes and specs. It does not replace your utility's own storm kit list.

Contain the oil

A transformer that comes down can leak on the way to the yard. ABG BOB bags go around the unit on the pole or pad and lift it as a sling, and ABG lists them with a DOT Special Permit for PCB oil containment. Match the bag to the mounting style and the kVA on the nameplate. Pole-mount bags run from the BOB-26 (10 to 25 kVA) to the BOB-70 (250 to 500 kVA). Pad-mount bags go up to 7,500 lbs.

For three-phase pad-mounts, the CT-84 (84 x 84 x 15 in open) and CT-96 (96 x 96 x 15 in open) FlexTrays fold to fit on a truck and strap to the transformer. The CAP-01 CapBag handles a single-phase 20 kV capacitor (22 x 11 x 23 in, 250 lb capacity). Check your own PCB handling and reuse procedures before reusing any containment bag.

Haul debris and set poles

The ST-08 (8 x 8 ft) and ST-10 (10 x 10 ft) Gorilla Tarps have lifting slings for debris, soil and pole sections. For aggregate and backfill at a pole setting, the PS-01 (55 gal, 1,500 lbs) and PS-02 (110 gal, 2,000 lbs) RockBags lift from the top and have a flow-control spout. Contact Powertech Associates to confirm the rated load for tarps.

Seal a leak without an outage

Polywater PowerPatch is a two-part epoxy sealant for oil and SF6 leaks on transformers, GIS and PILC cable. Polywater says it can often be applied without taking the equipment out of service. It is rated for 100 psi of continuous oil pressure for one month and a temperature range of -40°F to 300°F. For truck stock, the EP-KIT11 is a single-use kit and the EPCT-KIT1 is a cartridge kit that is also sold in boxes of six. Cartridge kits need a dispensing tool unless you order the version that includes it. Follow your utility's procedures for any work near energized equipment.

Cold-weather pulls

Polywater winter grade lubricants, such as WJ, can be used down to -20°F (-30°C). If your crews pull cable in cold storms, stock the winter grade alongside your regular lubricant.

Cable prep

Splices and terminations start with the right tools. Our Ripley guides sort them by job: jacket removal, semi-con removal and chamfering and penciling. Check blades and bushings after each storm so your spares match what your crews use.

Mark the work zone

EVERLAST signs come in hazard, PPE and construction messages, such as Hazardous Voltage Above, Construction In Progress and PPE Required In This Area. EVERLAST tags and holders mark poles and cables, including temporary circuits.

Truck stocking tips

  1. Put containment bags and sealant kits where they can be reached first.
  2. Count kits, blades and bushings after every storm and restock before the next.
  3. Match bag sizes to the transformers in your territory.
  4. Keep the winter grade lubricant separate from summer stock.
  5. Store tool cases and bags so tools stay protected from the weather.
