What Line Crews Carry: Hot Sticks, Bucket Hooks, Gloves and Visibility Gear

A bucket truck carries a lot of small gear, and each piece does one job. This guide covers what each piece is for, with the specs the manufacturers publish.

Working On or Near Energized Equipment

In the Bucket

Polymeric bucket hooks from Utility Solutions are machined hooks with a 5-year warranty. The USBH-001 is rated 35 lb WLL. The USBH-002 is rated 45 lb WLL on the outside hook and 55 lb combined on the interior hooks. A wide-slot variant is available for lined buckets.

On the Hands

Youngstown leather protectors go over rubber insulating gloves. Primary protectors fit Class 1 through 4 gloves and are arc rated 32 cal/cm². Youngstown states that its leather protectors do not protect against shock or voltage.

Youngstown FR work gloves list arc ratings from 8.6 to 72 cal/cm². Youngstown also states that its arc rated gloves do not protect against shock or voltage.

Staying Visible

Advanced Visibility makes GlowGuard FR vests in Class 2 and Class 3. Both are built the same way and differ in ANSI 107 class and sizes.

Advanced Visibility states the GlowGuard tape measures 1800+ mcd/m² two minutes after charging, and takes 480 minutes (8 hours) to fade to 0.32 mcd/m², which it describes as about 100 times the limit of human perception. The glow charges from natural daylight or artificial light. See Class 2 vs. Class 3 Advanced Visibility vests for how the two classes differ.

GlowGuard is a visibility feature. It does not provide electrical insulation or arc-flash protection and does not replace work lighting.
